Bedales school, located in Hampshire, started 2020 by introducing a unique and interesting new sixth form course to their options, Living with the Land. Known for their additional GCSE topic choices including Global Awareness and Outdoor Work, Bedales are introducing this extension of the Outdoor Work Bedales accredited course in September of 2020.
In an interview with iNews, headteacher Magnus Bashaarat introduced the course, summarising it as focusing on shelter, food and craft. Although not a traditional A level, the draft overview of the course states that the aim of the course is to 'equip students with the skills and understanding they need to survive in a world where self-sufficiency is becoming increasingly important'.
Breaking down the course in further detail, Mr Bashaarat explains that Living with the Land focuses on "sustainability, permaculture, biological science and farming ethically and sustainably". Students who are successful in gaining this qualification will be awarded a certificate in either Mastery, Artisan or Apprentice in Living with the Land.
The course is broken down further on the Bedales Schools website, bedales.org.uk:
"The main topics within the course will be shelter, food and craft. In the shelter module students will be taught how to construct buildings with natural materials, whilst the food module features cooking with seasonal ingredients and making items such as butter, cheese, bacon and pickles. The craft module includes blacksmithing, working wool, animal husbandry, woodwork, gardening and land care – such as managing hedgerows and coppicing."
A refreshing opportunity for students of Bedales, the school calls for the course to be accredited by Ofqual, allowing other students around the country the same freedom in course choice.
